4. In the Army

Judge Thurmond joined the Army when World War II broke out, which gave him needed distance from the near-scandals. Thurmond’s service during the war was honorable and heroic. As a circuit judge nearly forty years old, he certainly would not have been expected to serve. Nevertheless, he volunteered at the beginning of the war and stayed until the end. Thurmond participated in the Normandy invasion on D-Day, assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division. After Germany surrendered he served in the Pacific before returning to South Carolina. [43] Thurmond remained in the Army Reserve, and rose to the rank of Major General.
